Timeline and Milestones
Program Timeline
The complete transformation of Dartmouth’s energy infrastructure cannot happen overnight. To minimize major disruptions to campus, Dartmouth has carefully planned project phases that bring small parts of the system online at a time.
Dartmouth Decarbonization Timeline
Dartmouth’s plan to implement our energy transition will happen through a phased approach over multiple years. This timeline shows the construction progress of core technologies along the journey to carbon zero.

A Phased Approach
Geo-exchange borefields will work alongside heat pump plants that can move and store the heat captured by the geo-exchange system. The districts on the map represent groups of buildings that will be heated and cooled by the geo-exchange system as each geo-exchange plant comes online.

Steam to Hot Water Transition Construction Plan
Construction is underway for our steam to hot water transition. Steam distribution piping will be replaced with new, highly efficient hot water piping. Buildings will be updated to receive hot water distribution. Our phased approach will be routinely updated on the Campus Services website.
Stay up-to-date on Construction Progress
We know construction projects can be disruptive to daily life. We aim to minimize disruption by keeping relevant communications channels up-to-date. For detailed updates, please refer to the Campus Services Decarbonization page.
